Located in the Pomona Valley at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, Claremont was founded in 1887 by Boston land developers. By 1900, in this crop-friendly region, orange, lemon and grapefruit groves were well established. But after World War II, the citrus industry faded as residential and commercial real estate development became more profitable. Today, Clarmont is best known as the home of the California Botanical Garden (or Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden), the state's largest botanical garden dedicated to California native plants.
