The village is worth a visit for its Roman, Crusader and Ottoman remains, but the main attraction is the archaeological site of the ruins of Samaria (or Shomron). Founded in 876 BC as the capital of the Kingdom of Israel (the Northern Kingdom), it was taken in 722 BC by the Assyrian ruler Sargon II, who destroyed it. Rebuilt shortly afterwards, it remained active until the 2nd century BC, when it fell again. The ruins visible today, mainly a theater and a forum, date back to Roman times: Herod took possession of the city around 30 BC and renamed it Sebaste.
