Hawker is the last major town before the Flinders Ranges National Park and Wilpena Pound. Hawker was one of the stations on the Ghan line before its route was moved in the mid 1970s. However, the last train carrying passengers stopped here long before that, in 1956. Today, sheep and cattle farming is, along with tourism, the main economic resource of the region. The ruins of Kanyaka to the south are worth a visit. The Visitor Centre is located in the Mogas gas station. There are information panels on the history of the Flinders Ranges at the information point on Elder Terrace.
