Robe is a pretty fishing port and holiday resort for Adelaide residents. This small town of 1,500 inhabitants is pleasantly spread out. More than 80 historic houses, the first dating from 1840, are scattered throughout the town, such as Customs House, Royal Circus St., which dates from 1863. The town's main tourist attractions are its marina, beaches and pleasant lakes. It was here that Frenchman Nicolas Baudin first discovered the nearby Guichen Bay in 1802. Economic activity didn't develop until the 1950s, with the lobster fishing industry, and then with tourism.
