From Charleston to Summerville by Highway 61, the hinterland extending along Ashley River is the kingdom of plantations. These were mainly concentrated on the production of rice, a painstaking activity requiring a large slave labour force, hence the large size of farms. The rice fields were gradually abandoned and were submerged by the waters. So wetlands are everywhere today. It is in this region that you will be most likely to watch affected, small or adults. These plantations, once among the largest and richest in the country, are almost all along Ashley Road, also known as Highway 61. Diving in a legendary South, that of So much emporte the wind and the beautiful South.
