Mount Pleasant is located east of Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge that crosses the Cooper River and connects the city to Charleston. The city was founded in 1680 by English settlers, on a territory occupied until then by the Sewee Indians. It was in Mount Pleasant that the crew of the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley was secretly involved and sank the USS Housatonic in 1864. A very significant victory in the course of the Secession war, but a great first in the history of the naval war. Land of plantations and swamps, a visit to Mount Pleasant is an ideal complement to a stay in Charleston.
