Charleston was founded in 1670 and was one of the most important cities in the United States until the end of the th century. Its geographic position, in an estuary where Ashley and Cooper rivers meet, made it a large port of commerce. The export of cotton and the slave trade greatly enriched the city and the region throughout the entire Antebellum period (it is estimated that 40% of all slaves brought from force on the American territory have passed through Charleston). It was in the bay of the city that was taken the first gun of the war of Secession, when the Confederate attacked Fort Sumter on 12 April 1861. Wait to find a lot of tourists in the area, because it's one of the most popular destinations in the southeast. Today it is a lively, well preserved city with undeniable charm.
