Albany is the capital of New York State with a population of less than 100,000. The advantage of capitals, whose primary activity is government, is that most museums and monuments are free to visit. The city built in 1609 was a very important hub, thanks in particular to the Hudson River, named after the English explorer Henry Hudson who colonized the area on behalf of the Netherlands. Dutch culture is very present in Albany. The city's architecture is a mixture of modernity and the "French Renaissance" style that inspired the settlers to compete with the cities of Europe. This is not the only area in which Albany has faced Europe: before Prohibition, it was the second largest beer-producing city in the world (after London).
