Halfway between Albany and New York, Kingston was designated the first capital of the state in 1777, a status it retained until 1797. During the War of Independence, British troops invaded it and set fire to more than 300 of its buildings. The city is divided into three historic districts, located in Uptown, Midtown and Downtown. The Greater Kingston area has a population of 178,000.
