Lockport owes its name to the two locks it houses, located in the Erie Canal that crosses it. Lock City's history is closely linked to the history of the canal, having been founded in 1829, four years after the locks were installed. Even today, the canal continues to shape the lives of Lockport's 20,000 residents, and is the main reason tourists stop at Niagara Falls.
