The "southern" coast of the island, around the Maderas volcano, is less developed. Small villages and small facilities for travellers. The latter, with bags on their backs, are scattered along the coast or in the folds of the first flanks of the volcano. In fact, it's the best place to stay and meet other travellers from all over the world. It's also the most varied corner of the island in terms of flora and fauna, with many endemic plant species. Mérida is the best starting point in the area. Allow 2 hours 30 minutes by bus from Moyogalpa (three buses a day on weekdays), and 1 hour 30 minutes from Altagracia (5 buses a day on weekdays).
