The largest town in the east of the country before the Ukrainian border (39,050 inhabitants), Michalovce is not a huge tourist attraction: a forest of Soviet buildings, huge hypermarkets and a small centre rebuilt in the 1950s. Nevertheless, it can be a convenient stopover to discover the nearby natural areas of the Zemplínska šírava lake, the Vihorlat volcanic mountain range or the large Morské oko lake. Michalovce is also infamous for its "wall of shame", built around the town's Roma quarter to isolate the Gypsy population from their Gadje neighbours.
