Twenty-seven miles north of Duluth, Two Harbors, an iron ore industrial center, is the first major settlement encountered on Highway 61, with a population of approximately three thousand five hundred. Highway 61 offers scenic views of Lake Superior. From Duluth, another road, faster because it is inland, allows to reach Two Harbors, but the panoramas are less breathtaking. The big freighters come to load their goods in the big dark harbor of Two Harbors. A small park north of town on the lakefront offers a good view of these large ships and Lake Superior. This is the location of the Two Harbors Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse on the north shore of the lake, which was built in 1892
