Travel Guide Madeline Island

This is the largest island of the Apostle Islands archipelago. It is accessed by ferry in the spring, summer and autumn, and by car or foot in winter, when the ice is hard enough to move on it. This island was the headquarters of Jesuit trappers and missionaries during the discovery of the region. Then islands of the archipelago were used as stone quarries for building houses. Today, only two hundred people live here all year round, but the population climbs up to two thousand five cents during the summer months. The main village of Madeline Island is called lapointe. Located at the southwest tip of the island, facing Bayfield, it has everything to allow travelers to explore the island's 20 km and even stay one night or more: rental of bicycles, campsites, beaches, museum of local history, two natural parks. Madeline Island is named after the daughter of Indian chef White Crane, who is married with the trapper Michel Cadotte, the first White to have resided on the island.
