In the Hai Duong province, the Chi Linh rural district is known as the stronghold of the national hero Tran Hung Dao, who, in 1288, under the Tran Dynasty, commanded the Vietnamese Army that contests the Sino-Mongolian invaders during the battle of Bach Dang in the vicinity of Haiphong. The ancestral of General Tran Hung Dao are honoured at the temple of Kiep Bac. Close to Con Son, a pagoda honours another great figure in Vietnamese history, that of the scientist Nguyen Trai (1380-1442), both poet, geographer, strategist, diplomat and humanist.
