THE SHERMAN TANK
The Sherman Tank located at the G. Mazekplein, near the Lakenmarkt, standing since 1979 in memory of the liberation of Tielt.
At the G. Maczekplein, near Lakenmarkt, a Sherman tank of the same type with which the Poles liberated Tielt on September 8, 1944, has stood since 1979. It stands in memory of the liberation of Tielt by the 1st Polish Division, under the command of General Stanislaw Maczek. General Maczek is also celebrated in Tielt by a bronze work by Jef Claerhout. On the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Tielt and the surrounding region, the statue was installed at the Polenplein on September 8, 1994, Liberation Day. Many testimonies still recall the death of eight Polish soldiers during the war. They are buried in the Tielt military cemetery.
