This museum, dedicated to the famous animal sculptor François Pompon, houses Gallo-Roman steles.
Born in Saulieu in 1855, sculptor François Pompon is best known for his animal sculptures. He often took as his models the domestic animals he saw in farmyards, but also the wild and exotic animals he observed at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. His most famous work is undoubtedly the fabulous White Bear, reproductions of which can be seen at Saulieu and Dijon's Darcy Garden. With its natural curves, this work has become an Art Deco masterpiece, as well as a symbol of the Saulieu sculptor's expertise. In this museum dedicated to him, you can see a meticulous selection of his works, some of which are replaced each spring. The museum also features Gallo-Roman steles, a room dedicated to folk art and ancient crafts, and a room dedicated to the gastronomy for which Saulieu has become the symbol with Bernard Loiseau. A room is also devoted to the reconstitution of the main room of a traditional Morvan house, where the family shared daily meals around the hearth. The museum also hosts a number of temporary exhibitions each year. In 2025, the main change will be a complete overhaul of the museum's reception area. In fact, a local cabinetmaker has been commissioned to completely rethink the entrance using one of the Morvan's flagship materials: wood. A must when visiting Saulieu!
