Belur is of little importance today, apart from its superb 12th-century temple, a masterpiece of Hoysala architecture. The Hoysala rulers who ruled from the 10th to the 14th century erected the Chennakeshava temple in 1116 to commemorate their victory over the Cholas. The temple is still in use today.
