Coastal city located between Monastir (14 km) and Mahdia (28 km), on a road that has little charm. The history of the city goes back to antiquity when it was called Leptis Minor. It is originally a Libyan settlement subject to Punic influences. Chosen by the Carthaginians as a station in the Mediterranean basin because of its location, both safe and strategic for their ships, it became an important commercial center for a long period. Following the Islamic conquest, under the reign of the Aghlabids, the city was endowed in 859 with a ribat, probably built on the ruins of a Byzantine fortress.
