The ruins of the ancient city of Kerkouane are located 15 kilometers after El Haouaria and 15 kilometers before Kelibia. The road becomes narrower, the coast wilder and more beautiful. We pass Ezzahra where we find an unexpected forest bouquet. In the heart of this wood, a small hook on the left will lead you to Dar Chichou: the landscapes are superb by taking a little height. The road crosses the cape to join, on the other side, Sidi Daoud. Coming back on the Kelibia-El Haouaria road, we will find a little further the junction for the site of Kerkouane, at about 1 km. At Dar Allouche, a nice café awaits you, between the minaret and the gas pump, as well as another terrace in front of the Agil station. Kerkouane is one of the most important Punic cities with Carthage, Hadrumète and Utique, which existed for nearly 400 years and it is also one of the most beautiful ruins of Tunisia, planted between sea and forest and framed by two capes. The vestiges of this small city, probably of Libyan foundation, are spread out at the edge of the Mediterranean. But historians have many difficulties to date the destruction of Kerkouane with accuracy. Two explanations are accepted, it suffered the same fate as Carthage or it was destroyed at the end of the first Punic war. One thing is certain: it is its strategic location which earned it this fate.
