Located on the border with Mexico, the city of Brownsville's primary interest is as the site of the historic Battle of Palo Alto. In addition to its historical asset, Brownsville is also notable for the significant media attention it has received regarding immigration policies and the costs of funding border walls between Mexico and the United States. In 2006, President George W. Bush signed into law the Secure Fence Act, administering the construction of a border fence extending from San Diego, California to the entrance of the port of Brownsville. Later reinforced by the Trump administration.
