Created in 1986, Wanakreek is one of the reserves located between the savannah belt and the old coastal plain, within the Marowijne district. It covers an area of 450 km² and is renowned for its wet savannahs, in which some twenty ecosystems have been identified. Although the area has suffered from mining activities, there is a wide variety of vegetation. There's no shortage of wildlife here either: thousands of Amazona amazonica parakeets breed in the reserve, and the area is important for migratory waterfowl. This nature reserve can be visited from the village of Alfonsdorp.
