This village, 20 km inland, is worth a visit. You can get there from Visby, by road 143. You will see the ruins of a Cistercian monastery, in a setting reminiscent of the Eternal City. The monastery was built by monks belonging to the Cistercian order in 1164. The name has no connection with Rome, but is derived from the wordrum ("room", "hall" in Swedish), and refers more broadly to a gathering place. This is thought to be related to the central importance of the site as the meeting place of Gotland's highest political and legal body, the Gutnaltinget. After the Reformation, the monastery became a royal estate.
