Fårö, "the island of sheep", is easily accessible from the village of Fårösund, located about 15 km northeast of Lärbro on road 148. From Lärbro to Fårö, the road passes through a prohibited military zone, so the route will be completed without detours. In Fårösund, there is a ferry (about every half hour) to the island of Fårö, which is about one kilometer away. Fårö is the wildest, if not the most austere, part of Gotland. Its many shallow, transparent freshwater lakes, small fishermen's huts and secret coves are accessible via a network of roads. The main white sandy beaches are in Nordersand and Sudersand, at the northern end of the island. Here, as elsewhere on Gotland, the sea water is cool and generally shallow. But after passing a small wall of rocks on which the waves crash, the slope becomes steeper and you lose your footing very quickly. Numerous tracks criss-cross Fårö, following a coastline that is sometimes quite jagged and where you can discover the highest density of raukar existing in Gotland. To the west, the bay of Lauterhorn, about ten kilometers from the village of Fårö, is home to about twenty of them, including the famous "coffee pot"(Kaffepannan). It is at the northeastern tip of the island, near Skalasandsvik, in a setting of sandy and pebbled coves dominated by the lighthouse, that one experiences the sensation of being at the end of the world most keenly. These are probably some of the reasons why Ingmar Bergman chose to live here.
