This area south of Aomori is popular with hikers and skiers for its beautiful terrain, abundant snow in winter and hot springs. There are sixteen mountains in this area, with Odake being the main peak at 1,585 meters high. There is also a phenomenon called "snow monsters", due to the imposing shapes created naturally by frost and ice on the trees. This phenomenon, which is quite rare in Japan, attracts hikers during the winter months. To get to the cableway from Aomori, take a JR bus to Towada-ko and get off at the Hakkōda Ropeway-eki stop.
