Located on the border of the Chatillonais and Haute-Marne regions, on a rocky spur, Grancey-le-Château is a medieval village with about 300 inhabitants. The pretty wooded road leading to it from Dijon offers a breathtaking view: medieval houses, clinging to ramparts, surround a castle and a collegiate church. From the first glance, one can easily guess the existence of a rich historical past. It is very likely that the site was occupied very early by Celtic fortified camps. Many services and shops are present in the village with its majestic and austere air: post office, bakery, tobacco store, grocery store, bar, restaurant, and even a hairdresser. Don't hesitate to spend the day there, to walk through the timeless streets and to go to the parish church Saint-Germain, which has the particularity to be located at... 1 km from the village. Founded around 900, it is one of the oldest Romanesque churches in the region. There is an altar in pink marble from Courlon from the 18th century, a wooden statue of Saint Sebastian and very nice stained glass windows dating from the restoration of the church. Another curiosity: The weeping rock. The legend tells that one day in October, Nova, the wife of a lord of Grancey, who had left for the Crusades, died at the foot of this rock. The unfortunate husband came back the next day and cried so much for his beloved that two eyes dug themselves into the rock and still cry from time to time. Perhaps you will be the lucky spectator of this spell... Welcome to a land of legends and history!
