Bèze is recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in France, nestled in a green and shady valley. Its name comes from the Celtic word bezw which means "river at its source" or "fountain with still waters". The Duke of Burgundy, Amalgaire, received from King Dagobert all the lands located east of Dijon. After letting his horse drink from the spring, he went for a walk and was so charmed by the place that he decided to found an abbey there. The year was 630. From the following century, the monks transplanted vines from the village to the lands of Gevrey. The Clos de Bèze is today the oldest vineyard in Burgundy. Bèze was the birthplace of the deputy Arnoult, who, in 1790, gave the name Côte-d'Or to the newly created department. Canon Kir, the future mayor of Dijon, was the parish priest between 1910 and 1924. Favoured by history, this village is equally favoured by nature which has endowed it with splendid caves. It is a little corner of paradise where stone and water go hand in hand. Don't miss the visit to the cave where you can take a boat ride on the underground river with its crystal clear water. The rehabilitation project of the cure of Bèze presages a new embellishment of the village. A pedestrian bridge will span the river to go directly from the caves to the park of the Cure, whose building will be renovated and the garden laid out, allowing visitors to easily reach the center of the village and the abbey. Between restaurants, hotels, gites, shops, arts and crafts, cultural and natural heritage, there are many reasons to come to Bèze.
