Long Cay is a tapered spit of land south of Crooked Island to which it is connected by a daily ferry. Formerly known as Fortune Island, because Christopher Columbus found a beautiful conch pearl when he set foot there, it also had the sad honour of being home to the first prison in the Bahamas. At that time, it was the port of entry to the southern Bahamas and housed the administrative headquarters of the three islands, Crooked Island, Acklins and Long Island. Today it is home to a flamingo colony on the southern tip. Albert Town, once a stopover on the way to England, is a ghost town with only about 40 souls left.
