Founded by the Minas tribe in the 11th century, Amber was annexed by the Rajput Kashwahas in the 12th century. They made it their capital for almost 600 years. It was abandoned in 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II in favor of Jaipur, a modern and vast city located some ten kilometers to the south. Amber attracts visitors by the thousands for its immense fort, which, while featuring magnificent small palaces and unusual dimensions, is not the most beautiful in Rajasthan. It is overlooked by Jaigar Fort. The old village of Amber is also worth a visit for its authentic, unspoilt atmosphere, old temples and stepped well.
