This 34,000-hectare marine park, created in 1989, is located on an archipelago and consists partly of mangroves and salt marshes. The integration of other islands and a continental part has made it possible to protect the biotope of marine birds and especially the black-headed lion tamarin, discovered only in 1990. It is now one of the centres of interest of the planet for its biosphere and its ecosystem classified as world heritage by Unesco. The marine and terrestrial fauna (dolphins, jaguars, parrots) evolve quietly in its environment. The park has many trails and deserted beaches accessible from the fishing village Vila do Superagüi.
