90 km from Curitiba, Paranagua is the big port of the south of the country, founded at the end of the 16th century. A not unpleasant harbour atmosphere, both lively and provincial. By the sea, an old historical district. Paranaguá is not an obligatory stop, but if you come by train from Curitiba, you might as well stop there. Founded in 1549, Paranaguá became one of the main export ports for Brazilian coffee, wood and soybeans. This charming colonial town has an old quarter with an old-fashioned tropical atmosphere on the edge of the bay. Its port, Ponto do Sul, serves the paradisiacal Ilha do Mel, anchored at the entrance to Paranaguá Bay.
