Nyborg was one of the three most powerful fortified cities in Denmark in the 17th century along with Copenhagen and Fredericia. The fortress has been demolished but there are still some remains around the castle which is worth a visit. Before the foundation of the castle, a fortification already existed under the name of Gammelborg. Probably established in the 500s, it was used throughout the Viking era until Nyborg (the new castle) was founded in 1193. In the course of history, it was the place where royal meetings were held. Thus, the city has enjoyed many merchant privileges, including permission to host an annual fair.
