Afula is located halfway between Nazareth and Jenin, in the Palestinian Territories. It is a city of 49,000 inhabitants, 99% of whom are of Jewish origin, and is considered the capital of the Jezreel Valley. Founded in 1925, however, it was only declared a city in 1972. It is now a major bus transit centre between the west coast and the Tiberias region. There is a large hospital, the Haemek Medical Center.
