Raiatea was a major religious metropolis and ceremonial centre in the 16th century. And if there is one site that played a considerable role in the development of the Maohi civilization, it is the great marae of Taputapuatea. Priests came here from all over the archipelago; stones were collected and transported from island to island to plant new "marae Taputapuatea", dedicated to the god Oro. This is why traces of marae known as "Taputapuatea" can be found in Fakarava, Tahiti, Moorea, Tubuai and even elsewhere in the Pacific. A footpath starts from the site and leads in 45 minutes of walk to a beautiful point of view.
