This city of less than 2,200 inhabitants stands proudly on the plain. You can visit the palace of the Marquis of Santa Cruz, Don Alvaro de Bazán, who was second in command of the Spanish fleet at Lepanto (1571), where Cervantes came to seek the military glory to which he aspired like most of his contemporaries. The famous writer lost his left hand there and suffered five years of slavery in the prison of Algiers. In this splendid palace dating from 1564, behind a majestic but austere facade lies a precious Italian décor, and around a classical patio are the archives of the Spanish Navy.
