Maysville is located on the Ohio River in Mason County, 66 miles northeast of Lexington. Founded on Buffalo Trace, a natural passage created by the bison that inhabited the region, Maysville was born from 1784 with the creation by Simon Kenton of a fortified tower tower and then Kenton Station, near the current Old Washington District. A few years later, John May acquired a land near there (Limestone), while Daniel Boone was near a traffic station and a tavern. The city grew later and became truly flourishing from 1795 onwards after the end of the conflict with Indians in the region (North West Indian War 1785-1795).During the war of Secession, Maysville was an important step in Underground Railroad (the network of clandestine roads used by slaves to leave Southern states) because of the proximity, across the river, of the Free state of Ohio. With two suspended bridges thrown over the river and located a few kilometres away (Simon Kenton Memorial Bridge, 1931, and William H. Hasha Bridge, 2000), Maysville is the only crossing point between Kentucky and Ohio at 60 miles at the round (Covington-Cincinnati and South Shore-Portsmouth).This picturesque little town of 9 000 is the birthplace of Rosemary Clooney (1928-2002, George Clooney's aunt), who was a great music hall artist from the 1950 s. The venerable Russell Theatre, dating back to 1930, welcomed it in 1953 for the first of The Stars are Balladeer. Today, he presented the famous Rocky Horror Picture Show in an interior of souhait. Also noted, the Washington Opera Theatre, inaugurated in 1889, at the superb facade; the Cox Building, dating back to 1887 and the very beautiful corner tower; or Phillips'Folly, a beautiful house built between 1825 and 1831, which was the house of the second mayor of the city, William B. Phillips, that same that welcomed Lafayette during his visit in 1825.Among the visits to be made, the Kentucky Gateway Museum Center is among the most important. On the outskirts of Ohio, we discover mural frescoes by artist Robert Dafford, well known for his other works, particularly in Covington or Paducah to name only Kentucky. They tell here the story of Maysville and its region. Passing through the city, don't miss to go to the Old Pogue Distillery, which is part of Bourbon Trail. A few kilometres from the centre of Maysville, the Old Washington District houses a number of historic houses worth the detour, such as the residence of General Albert Sidney Johnston, who died at the battle of Shiloh, built in the late 1790 s, or Mefford's Fort, a simple dwelling built from the boat of George Mefford, who fell in 1797 to Ohio on board with his bord. women and her 13 children. There is also a visit to Harriet Beecher Stowe - Slavery To Freedom Museum established in The Marshall Key House, which dates back to 1807.
