The second city of the state after Louisville, Lexington has just under 315,000 inhabitants (more than 500,000 for the agglomeration). It is located in the middle of the Bluegrass Region, whose name comes from the blueberry aspect in early spring. Since its founding in 1775, the birthplace of George Clooney or the sprinteur Tyson Gay base is based on bourbon, like most of the region, but mainly on horse breeding. It bears the title of the World Capital of Horse. The city center is pleasant, particularly in the northern part of downtown, near Gretz Park and Transylvania University, where there are beautiful houses. Notable efforts to develop the city include the gradual rehabilitation of the former distillery district in the north-west of downtown downtown The Distillery District, a tourist pole with many places of exit and restoration… and already two distilleries! Apart from annual events related to the hippic environment, two renowned festivals take place in June: The Bluegrass Festival (the oldest bluegrass festival in Kentucky) and the Broadway Lexington Opera House. The last Sunday in June is the Lexington Pride Festival (Gay Pride) and in September the Jefferson Street Evening (culinary and musical festival).
