About 30 km southwest of Siena, this impressive 13th-century Cistercian abbey has the particularity of having the sky as its roof. The first Gothic church in Tuscany, it is an architectural gem, a marvel of medieval heritage. Not far away, at the top of a hill, the hermitage of Montesiepi, built at the end of the 12th century, houses a famous sword surrounded by legends. Two roads of historical and economic importance converge here: the Massetana, which connects Siena to the sea, crossing Massa Marittima and the metal-bearing hills, and the ancient Strada Maremmana, which links the Tuscan heartland with Grosseto.
