Prijedor/Приједор (pronounced "priedor") has a population of about 29,000, 63% of which are Bosnian-Serbs. It is the capital of the municipality of Prijedor (population 89,000), in the Bosnian Serb Republic. It is located 24 km southwest of Kozara National Park, 30 km north of Sanski Most and 56 km northwest of Banja Luka. Bus connections to Banja Luka, Sanski Most and Bihać, train connections to Banja Luka.Prijedor doesn't have much to offer visitors: a few colorful houses from the Austro-Hungarian period, a Ferris wheel sitting on the banks of the Sana, a small regional museum (Monday-Friday 8am-3pm, 6-8pm, Saturday 9am-1pm in theory) and buildings with walls painted by artists. Once mixed, Prijedor suffered the full force of Serbian "ethnic cleansing" in 1992-1995. In the village of Tomašica (17 km to the southeast) was discovered in 2013 the largest mass grave in the country: more than a thousand bodies. It was here that the Bosnian-Serb forces buried some of their Bosnian and Bosnian-Croat victims: inhabitants of Prijedor and inmates executed at the concentration camps of Omarska (21 km to the southeast), Keraterm (2 km to the southwest) and Trnopolje (10 km to the southeast). The Sarajevo-based tourism agency Highlander Adventures (highlander.ba) is to be commended for offering a memorial tour with a survivor from Trnopolje. It's not cheap (150 €/person), but it's the only way for the moment to know this part of Prijedor's history.
