A place of classical style designed by the architect of the city hall in Maastricht and the Mauritshuis in Leiden
It was built on plans by Pieter Post around 1657, at the point where the rivers Oude Rijn, Nieuwe Rijn and Mare meet. As Leiden did not have a large square, it was logical that the public weight was located along the water to facilitate the entry of goods into the city. The public weight prevented any cheating with the weighing of goods, and the weights used were officially calibrated. It is a place of classical style designed by the architect author of the City Hall of Maastricht and the Mauritshuis.
