The fourth largest city in Limburg, Heerlen had a population of just over 87,000 in 2016. It grew rapidly during the development of the mining industry. After the closure of the mines in the early 1970s, the city experienced a deep employment crisis. Heerlen has a very interesting mining museum and a thermal baths museum, which shows the ancient history of the region. The city is linked to other cities in the region, such as Maastricht and Sittard-Geleen, in an attempt to strengthen economic ties. Economic and cultural links are also present with Belgium and Germany. A jazz festival takes place every year.
