Dungun and its port form the largest urban area in the south of the state. It was prosperous with iron mining until the 1940s, and now lives on fishing. Although not particularly interesting, it can be used as an evening stopover. Kuala Dungun is the landing stage for the islet of Pulau Tenggol, a diving treasure trove.
