Located 265 km east of San Luis Potosí and inhabited by 170,000 people, the city of Ciudad Valles is the capital of the Huasteca. The city was founded in the 16th century by the conquistador Nuño de Guzmán under the name of Villa de Santiago de Los valles de Oxitipa, but for practical reasons its name was later shortened to Ciudad Valles. Bordered by the river Valles, it is a provincial city without charm or particular attraction, with a stifling heat. Often presented (wrongly) as the gateway to the Huasteca, it is nonetheless a convenient base for visiting the many natural attractions located in the north of the region
