Xilitla ("place of snails" in Nahuatl) is a mountain village located about 70 km south of Ciudad Valles. Perched on the slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental, in the middle of the rainforest, it offers not only beautiful scenery, but also many sites to visit. Its centre is very small and consists of two or three streets arranged around the central square and the sixteenth-century San Agustín convent. On Sundays it hosts huapango groups. But the main attraction will always be Las Pozas de Edward James, the surrealist garden designed in the rainforest by the eccentric British billionaire.
