The Sótano de las Golondrinas is located 56 km south of Ciudad Valles, near the village of Aquismón (halfway between Ciudad Valles and Xilitla). It is an impressive cavity of 512 meters deep (376 meters vertically) and 55 meters in diameter, located in the heart of the exuberant vegetation of the Huasteca Potosina. Every day, at sunrise (the site opens at 5am, entrance fee: $40), thousands of swallow-like birds fly out of the cave, only to return to nest at nightfall. It's a truly breathtaking sight, not to be missed if you're in the area.
