KEMIJÄRVI MUSEUM
Located in the heart of Kemijärvi, this museum immerses visitors in peasant life in the early 1900s. Its main building, a 19th-century farmer's house still in its original location, forms the heart of the site. Exhibits trace the region's traditional lifestyles: cattle rearing, forestry, fishing, hunting and reindeer husbandry. The museum is run by the local Kemijärven Kotikiekerö association.
The history of the house begins with Pekka, an enterprising man who, in 1760, married Anna and acquired a farm recently cleared by chaplain Nils Fellmann. Together with his son Nils Filsmann, Fellmann built a whitewashed house on the edge of Särkimäki. Even Anna's grandmother, a locksmith's daughter, found refuge there. This was the birthplace of the first family to occupy this house. In 1782, a smallpox epidemic hit the family hard: the parents and eldest son disappeared, leaving Maria, then aged 16, with sole responsibility for the household and her seven younger siblings.
The current main building dates back to the late 18th century. The site also includes several outbuildings: barns, stables and an authentic traditional sauna. The museum offers an immersion into the rural life of yesteryear, a visit full of charm.
The Kemijärvi Local Heritage Museum is open by appointment, summer and winter. It's just 1 km from the town center in the direction of Rovaniemi, and 500 m from the train station.
