Lake Chivero, formerly Lake MacIlwaine, named after one of the founders of the Soil and Water Conservation Movement, is a dam lake. The dam wall is 400 m long, holds 250,000 million liters of water and covers an area of 2,630 ha. It is the main source of water for the capital. However, Lake Chivero as a recreational park is also intended for the city dwellers of the capital who like to come there to relax on weekends. On the northern shore there are a few small ports, bars, hotels and private land, while on the southern shore an animal reserve has been set up. There are giraffes, zebras, different species of antelopes, ostriches, crocodiles, but also rhinoceroses! It is also a bird paradise: open-billed storks, barbicans, bee-eaters, buzzards, coots, cormorants, doves, grackles, kingfishers, grey herons, goliath herons, eagles, jackdaws, long-billed rollers, to name a few. Some beautiful rock paintings can also be seen at the Bushman's Point picnic area. Other activities include horseback safaris in the south, boat and canoe rentals in the north, and a visit to Kuimba Shiri Bird Park.
