Although this small town (population 8,000) on the outskirts of Barcelona is of little interest in itself, it is home to one of the jewels of Catalan modernism, the Colònia Güell, whose crypt, designed by Gaudí, is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Santa Coloma also boasts numerous itineraries for hiking enthusiasts: the Montpedrós climb (350 m), for example, offers magnificent views over the Baix Llobregat and its farmlands. As for festivities, the town celebrates the Cherry Festival in late May/early June, and the Modernisme Festival on the second weekend in October.
