Since February 2020, the 12,000 year old city of Hasankeyf has sunk under water because of a hydroelectric dam on the Tigris River. This ancient stop on the Silk Road, a strategic point for the Byzantines and Sassanids, joined the Ottoman Empire in 1515, and was inhabited without interruption. The charm of this city was due to its troglodytic dwellings scattered along the road leading to the fortress. An open-air museum exhibits several remains that were moved before the sinking. As for the inhabitants whose houses were engulfed, they were relocated in spacious apartments on the other side of the river.
