The new town, Estel, of this locality of the province of Mardin (located at 65 km of the city of the same name) does not present a real interest apart from the jewelers which skirt the street leading to the old city whose charm is certain. In this historic part ("Eski Midyat"), there are beautiful houses with honey-colored facades. There are also nine Syriac Orthodox churches in the city, some of which are over 300 years old. On the front doors of the churches are carved inscriptions in Syriac, the Aramaic dialect used by the Christians of Mesopotamia. The vast majority of the Christian community has deserted the area.
